Being positive has a wide range of benefits for both your physical and mental well-being. However, having a positive outlook on life is easy when things are already going well. It is more challenging however, to be positive when life gets difficult and everything seems to be going wrong. It is in these cases where you need to work harder to pull yourself out of the slumps. This post will show you how you can easily stay positive during the tougher times.
The Importance & Benefits of Positive Thinking
You can do and achieve almost anything with a mind that has the willingness and determination to do it. It has a great impact on our mental, emotional and physical health. In addition, there’s evidence that positive thinkers live a longer lifespan, are less prone to sickness, experience less stress, and are generally more blissful. Furthermore, it can help build relationships since positive thinkers radiate a kind of aura that just attracts others toward them.
Why is it difficult to do when times are difficult?
If you follow the stories of successful people, you will see a trend of failures which they had to overcome in order to achieve their success. Although, the message is to keep going when things get difficult, this is easier said than done. The reason for this is because of the negativity bias. In psychology, the negativity bias is the notion that bad things have a stronger impact, and also have longer-lasting effects than good things. This is why it is difficult to be positive especially when life gets difficult.
How to be Positive
1. Master self-talk
Our words have a very powerful impact on our lives and mindset, it is therefore important that you are careful of the words that you say to yourself. Say kind things to yourself by using affirmations or practising positive self -talk.
2. Celebrate small wins
Celebrating your achievements can greatly motivate you and improve your mood. It is true that simply recording progress in some way helps to boost self-confidence and can be put to use toward future successes.
Meditation is essential to feel well and live a Happy Life. It works because it help you to eliminate negative thoughts, worries, anxiety and anything else that can prevent you from feeling happy. Furthermore, it will help you see the positive side to all aspects of your life.
4. Journal what you’re grateful for
Gratitude is important to help you have a healthier mindset and look towards all of the good happening in your life. Journalling the reasons that you have to be grateful for allows you to arrange your thoughts and self-reflect.
5. Challenge negative thoughts with positive ones
Thinking negative thoughts is the main way to let negativity in your life, making it difficult to be positive during difficult times. The good news is the you are in control of your mind and what you let into it. Research shows that to balance out your negative thoughts, think of 3 positive things in your life for every negative thought that you have.
6. Get Moving/Active
Since the wellness of your body and mind are linked, if you are struggling to see the bright side, getting active may help you feel better. According to an article by Uline, exercise promotes chemicals in the brain that improve your mood and make you more relaxed. Specifically, the brain releases feel-good chemicals called endorphins throughout the body. Physical activity reduces anxiety and depressed mood, and enhances self-esteem.
7. Listen to music that makes you happy
Recent research shows that listening to music improves our mental well-being and boosts our physical health in surprising and astonishing ways. These include improving health, decreasing stress, improving sleep quality and an overall improvement of your mood which can help you see the positive aspects of your life.
8. Surround yourself with positive influences
I do this more often. I listen to audiobooks, podcasts and videos that uplift and motivate me. This helps remind me anything is possible and I can work through whatever tough situation I may be going through at that moment.
9. Limit your intake of bad news
A lot is happening in the world and when you are not in a good mental state, feeding your mind with all of this information will only leave you feeling worse. So if you are going through difficult times, limit your exposure to this negativity and do more of what makes you happy.
10. Talk about your issues with someone
Letting your issues bottle up inside will eventually lead to depression. So if you share your struggles with someone you trust is a good form of release and you may get encouragement from others to help you keep going. Journalling is another way to relate those feelings.
11. Practise positivity
It is not always easy to see positivity in life, sometimes you need to actively weave positivity into your life. This means that you need to make it a point that you practise seeing the positive and eventually it will come more easily to you.
