Moving into your first apartment can be a bit overwhelming. There are lot of things to consider. For me, an important aspect of moving into my first apartment, was making sure that it feels like home. I found that I got so wrapped in making sure that I got the basics on lock down, such that I completely forgot to add my personal touch.
What made it worse is that I went to visit one of my friends that had moved into her place earlier than I did. And it looked really good. She had a random pink vase by her TV stand. It was empty, but it did so much for the whole place. That is when I learnt that making a place feel like yours is in the little things.
There are so many different ways of making your new apartment feel like it is actually yours. And most of these are absolutely affordable, so that’s a plus!
So let’s get right into it. Here are 10 simple items that you can add to your new apartment to make it feel like home.
To make your apartment feel homey right from the beginning, ditch the blinds that came with it. Curtains are not just a way of getting privacy. But they are also a great way of creating the ambiance of the room. So get curtains that are going to reflect your personality and set your mood. Also, I like to have a different theme during the summer and winter months. Choosing the right curtains is the easiest way to achieve this.
2. Photo Gallery or Artwork
If you are going to be on your own for the first time, it is a great idea to have reminders of the people you love. A photo gallery will leave you feeling at home and will definitely bring a smile to your face every time you look at them.
Alternatively, artwork with the right frame will add uniqueness to your new apartment. You don’t need to over board or break the bank on this one. Just get a simple piece that reflects the kind of person that you are.
3. An Area Rug
So my first apartment had this hideous floor carpet. It just did not go well with the kind of person that I am, and I knew it would just depress me. On top of that, since I was renting I could not remove it. So an area rug came to my rescue. It makes the place look cosy and it just brings warmth to a room. You can choose one that will work well with the theme of the room. Or pick an area rug that brings your furniture together.
4. Throw Pillows
Throw pillows enhance whatever seating setup you may have. I mean your sofa or couch of course. They are definitely the easiest way of putting together a theme. I know I am talking about this theme a lot but for me it was essential to have some kind of theme. It just made me feel great and a bit grown up for achieving a cool theme. Throw pillows are also great for the bedroom. Instead of sticking to the bedding that came in the packet you bought, scattering throw pillows will add your personality to the room.
5. Throw Blanket
Okay I know, it is starting to seem like to have a homey place you should have stuff to ‘throw’ around. That is only half true. It’s just that they are an easy way of adding your personal touch to your new place. Okay so throw blankets. They are the perfect piece to hang over your sofa. They are a great decorating piece, especially for your theme (yes that same theme again). But having a throw blanket is also very practical for when you want to relax and catch up on netflix, or simply to take a quick nap.
6. Decor that reflects your personality
Add a personal touch that is going to show your guests that YOU live here. It is also definitely going to make you feel at home. There is something about having flowers or some other kind of potted plant that makes you feel warm inside. So add any decor item that will make you smile whenever you look at it, and make you feel relaxed.
7. A signature Scent
Using candles is perfect for bringing a certain scent to a room. It helps create a certain atmosphere that will leave you feeling some typa way. So add a few candles, and having them blend well with your theme is a plus. They are also a great decorating piece that shows off your personality.
Lighting is one aspect that is easily overlooked. It’s easy to just stick with the lighting fixture that you found installed when you moved in. But customizing your lighting fixtures will avoid having your place all gloomy or dull. The right lighting will transform your place from a dark depressing place to an amazing, well-lit and welcoming place. A place that can definitely uplift your spirit. Lighting is especially a problem for small spaces, so consider lighting that will upgrade your small apartment.
9. Bright-colored Walls
If possible, add a little color to your walls by painting them a different color that would suit you. If you don’t absolutely have to stick with the boring old white walls of the apartment, then don’t. Painting the walls will make the place feel like it is truly YOURS. If painting the walls is not an option, then consider removable wall paper. This will at least make it feel like the place is yours for the time that you are there.
10. Well-stocked Kitchen Essentials
Nothing makes a place feel more like home than a home-cooked meal. So it is essential to have the right tools that you are going to need. At first, I was just so amazed by how having the right utensil can make the whole cooking process much easier.
But when you are starting out, you might stumble as you are trying to find your way around the kitchen. I wasn’t that clueless when I started out, but my biggest challenge was having a variety of meals daily. So I would always run out of ideas. Recipe books have been my saving grace. The recipe book on How to Cook Everything: 2,000 Simple Recipes for Great Food was a great starting point for me. Then I grew my skills from there, and now I can even make more fancy meals. There is honestly nothing more satisfying than successfully making a beautiful meal. Plus it is healthy and will save you a ton of money. See the post on how to manage your finances in your 20’s to find other changes that will help you save money.
I know that these may seem overwhelming right now. But the trick is to try these one at a time, and just add on as time goes on. This is not like with the essentials of moving in that have to be accomplished as soon as you move into your new place.
Remember, the key in making a place feel like home is in the small things. The changes mentioned in this post are not major changes. It’s just a little thing here and there that makes all the difference.
